Built in, not bolted on

Integration tools sit outside your apps and see only what each one chooses to share. Switchboard sits inside Methodical. Every board, table, document and app already reports what happens in it — a due date moved, a row added, a request approved, a last working day recorded — so a rule can act on any of it.

A rule can start when an email arrives in Outlook or Gmail, a meeting is created, changed or cancelled in an Outlook calendar, a file is uploaded to OneDrive, a message is posted in a Teams channel or chat, or someone comments on or mentions your Instagram account. A rule can then send email through Outlook or Gmail, add, change or cancel meetings in the Outlook calendar, save a file to OneDrive, post to a Teams channel or chat, publish photos, videos and carousels to Instagram, and pull Instagram insights. Any other system that can send or receive a notification over the web can start a rule, or be told when one runs.

When we don't connect to a system yet, we build the connection. Our engineers work with agents that read the system's documentation, build and host the connector, and add its events and actions to Switchboard. Several connectors in production today were built this way.

The goal: every app in the company wired to every other, so what happens in one part of the business reaches the rest of it. A nervous system, not a set of connections someone has to remember to maintain.
